Two people standing side by side. Similar backgrounds, similar education. They are long time friends. They see something happen, together, at the same time, standing shoulder to shoulder. If you separate them before they can discuss what they saw, each is going to tell you something different about what they both saw happen. This is a fact of human existence. Ask any police officer.
Why does this happen? Because each has their own set of subconscious filters through which they view the world. These filters might be put in place by the same experiences. However, the subconscious mind puts its own interpretation on everything and it is as unique as a fingerprint. So, though they each saw the exact same thing, from the exact same distance and perspective, they each describe something different. It is an inescapable phenomenon caused by individual interpretations of the same set of facts.
Now, what does that mean to us? It means that, although 2 people, even with similar backgrounds, have the same problem, the way that problem started is going to be different. The root cause of Dan's anxiety, will be different than Tom's even though anxiety is anxiety. Therefore, the approach to stop the anxiety will have to be different, That is exactly what a hypnotist does. They help the client go inside themselves and identify and deal with the cause of the problem, in order to allow the client to solve the problem themselves.
Every problem in the human condition has two things. Cause and effect. Some problems are very easy to figure out. However, because of the way the mind works, changing it can be difficult to near impossible, for them. Simple or complex, the repair is normally outside of our direct control. Speaking of smoking, how many times does a person quit smoking before they are successful? They decide they are quitting, apply willpower and viola, within a couple hours or days, they are smoking again.
Why does this happen? They have iron will, yet, they were unable to change the smoking habit. The reason lies in the function of the mind. There are two parts involved in this. The conscious mind. That part that is our awareness of the outside world, the passage of time, the danger of stepping out in front of a truck. And the subconscious mind. That part that stores our long term memory, deals with emotion, creative factors, art, musical ability and running the programs that make up our being. It is in control of all change.
The conscious and subconscious both work to protect us. But, the conscious mind also works to protect the subconscious. When new information is introduced, the conscious mind receives it, examines it, compares it to the old information, stored in the subconscious, and if the two are at odds with one another, the conscious mind bounces the new information out without the subconscious ever examining it. Therefore, the smoker makes a conscious decision to stop smoking and applies willpower. However, since this new information is at odds with the subconscious memory that they are a smoker, nothing changes. The conscious mind does not allow that information to pass into the subconscious, where changes are made.
If, when you were a young child, your parents showed you a rectangle, but told you it was a square, what do you think would have happened in school when the teacher identified it as a rectangle? Your subconscious would have identified it as a square and sent that information to the conscious mind. Then, the conscious mind would have defended that identification against any differing information, because to the conscious mind “THAT'S A SQUARE!”
You likely would argue with the teacher and land in the principals office.
Go to the FAQ and read Steven C. Parkhill's “Onion Is An Apple” for an explanation how these things can easily be changed. You simply need to access the subconscious mind directly, and install the new information directly, without the conscious mind bouncing it out. Sounds fairly simple no? In a lot of ways, it truly is that simple. At least to a hypnotist. A hypnotist can accomplish more for you in two sessions than reading 20 self help books, for exactly this reason.
If you have read the information on hypnosis on this site, you already know the truth about hypnosis. You do not sleep, you do not lose control, you are not a zombie, you cannot be made to commit a crime and you cannot get “stuck” in trance.
You also understand that hypnosis is a natural function of the mind. One you literally can not live without.
The subconscious mind is the most powerful mechanism for change in human existence. Take advantage of that. Whatever the problem, construct a solution, formulate a plan to make the changes needed to get the desired outcome. And then make those changes. Hypnosis can help you install the new program quickly and effectively, creating the changes you desire. And hypnotist can do it without the interference of the conscious mind, which is only trying to protect you, and the subconscious mind.
